Intermission

Software/Materials: Figma, Illustrator, Photoshop

Intermission is a fictitious app designed to help people with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome practice pacing, an energy management technique used to improve quality of life. The app uses Spoon Theory, a framework for explaining chronic illness created by Christine Miserandino that uses spoons to represent units of energy. Intermission lets users plan their day according to how many spoons they have so they can set realistic expectations and prevent a worsening of symptoms.

To be successful among users with ME/CFS, the Intermission app needs to be simple and intuitive to reduce the amount of energy it takes to use it. Visually, simplicity is achieved with a monochromatic color scheme, generous spacing, and clean linework icons. The home screen of the app allows users to see all of their most important information in a single glance. Activities can be created, assigned spoon values, and reused so users can plan their day with ease.
